Q: Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Mayuko Hoshino, and I'm a Community Lead here at the Hive Jinnan. I'm originally from Kobe and I came to Tokyo last summer. I organize collaborations through events and community partnerships, and, of course, I am one of the welcoming faces for current and potential Hivers.

Q: What problem does the Hive Jinnan solve?

The Hive Jinnan has a prime location in a quiet neighborhood of Shibuya, Tokyo's busiest area. This allows our members to be close enough to the city center for all their business needs and distanced enough to focus and connect away from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya.

Q: What is the profile of your customers? 

The Hive Jinnan accommodates businesses at every stage, from individual entrepreneurs to teams of 40+. We have an international, on-growing, diverse community of members operating in all industries and we facilitate growth through a range of services that attract professionals from all fields.

However, early-stage Japanese startups and freelancers in particular have a lot to benefit from us as we are extremely flexible and able to tailor our services according to the member.

Q: What is a typical day like for you, managing this coworking space? 

A typical day at the Hive involves checking all floors regularly to make sure pantries are clean and stocked, offices and meeting rooms always "tour-ready," and ensuring that all members are thriving in our space. 

We connect with members on a daily basis and welcome their guests into the space throughout the week. 

We make coffee, give tours, and regularly host events to bring the community together. We are here as your go-to person to make sure you've got everything you need to have a productive day!

Q: What has been challenging for the Hive Jinnan during these pandemic times? 

The pandemic has had significant impacts on the Hive’s community and global economy, which has required us to stay dynamic and adapt to our communities’ needs.

We are taking extensive precautionary measures to ensure our spaces are safe and sanitized as well as provide rent relief to members. We do our best to support the wider business community by offering promotional deals and going the extra mile to ensure we accommodate everyone the best we can during this tumultuous time.

I would say the most challenging and unfortunate effect has been that we are unable to host large-scale events open to the public, which has always been a great way for people to network and have fun.

Q: What's something that surprises first-time members about the Hive Jinnan? 

First-time members are often surprised by the level of personal and friendly service that we offer, as well as our flexibility.
